Being a small business is about filling service gaps that larger corporations can’t—that’s what differentiates us, that’s what defines us. So here are 3 things we do to make sure our clients know why they chose us over a big corporation in the first place:
- When a local customer places an order for goods we manufacture in-house, we will turn the order in a single day if necessary, driving it to their office or requested location to make the delivery. Our customers know that if it can be done, it will be done by us. The fact that our customers know they can rely on us to come through for them is worth the extra effort on our part.
- When our residential delivery business increased (as part of several fulfillment programs we run), we partnered with both UPS and the U.S. Postal Service to take advantage of money-saving delivery programs, cutting our shipping costs by as much as 30% per package. The systems work together to tell us which one will be least expensive and then gives us the opportunity to choose the one we want to use.
- We cross-train all production employees—they learn more and become more valuable to us. We have increased production because they can ‘cover’ for one another or give us more depth in an area on any given day when demand requires extra hands.
So ask yourself: What can I do that the big guys can’t? Because the answer to that question is what keeps the SBE community going.
