Entry #5: See the Ball, Be the Ball

People ask me how in four years of business did we work with the NFL for 3 of the last 4 Super Bowls, and provide systems for Walt Disney World, BMW and the Republican National Convention.

Spotlight 12/2012 Entry 5 Be The Ball

I tell them one principle I’ve always stuck with is to always put my best foot forward.  Back when I was my only employee, I started thinking about where I wanted to be in the future and decided that I wanted to be one of the industry leaders that I should look like I belonged.  So I decided that I should look and act and dress like them from day one.

There were many, many times in the beginning that I felt foolish dressing up and going to an empty office with no appointments.  But then I started noticing that if I looked like I was going somewhere then I was more motivated to find somewhere to go that day.  I started attending networking and other meetings every day and started running into my future customers on a regular basis.

I kept this same principle for all employees I hired and for our website and every promotional item we produced.  When we provided a system for our first Super Bowl we had been in business for less than a year but you wouldn’t have known that by the way we presented ourselves.

I encourage all small businesses to picture how they want to look and operate in the future and to start doing that now.  If you think, look and act small then that’s all you’ll ever become!

I'm a lifelong entrepreneur, starting/running businesses since I sold seeds door-to-door when I was 7 in The Bronx. I've been playing guitar and enjoying the game of baseball since I was 5 (born a NY Yankees fan). I married Kim in 1983 & we have two sons; Daniel's a real smart, insightful & well read musician (www.thefieldrecordings.com) and Adam is a brilliant senior @ Brooklyn College double majoring in creative writing/literature & anthropology. I started my 1st company in January 1985, and other than selling a company in 1999 and running it for a multi-billion dollar company for 2 years before buying it back, I've been self-employed. I sold my last company, Mentor Communications Group, in 2004 and after 2 years with the acquiring company I left and started The Allasso Group, LLC doing Sales Strategy & Business Development, Marketing Communications, Social Media since April 2006. Although I'm still contracted by Supplier-Connection as their Small Business Advocate, I recently was contracted to run a software company http://myvrm.com. I enjoy consulting, but it's really great to be running an SBE again.
